BioInitiative Working Group issues a “No Confidence” letter to World Health Organization EMF program manager

From Bioinitiative.org

The BioInitiative Working Group has advised the World Health Organization’s Dr. Emilie van Deventer that the membership composition of the RF Environmental Health Criteria Core Group is unacceptable.  WHO is urged to make changes to the WHO RF EHC Core Group membership to more fairly reflect membership and expertise of the 2011 IARC RF Working Group.

Attention: Dr. E. van Deventer
Subject: WHO RF EHC Core Group Membership is Unacceptable

The BioInitiative Working Group urges the World Health Organization to make changes to the WHO RF EHC Core Group membership to more fairly reflect membership and expertise of the 2011 IARC RF Working Group. At present the WHO RF EHC Core Group is indistinguishable from ICNIRP (1, 2) undermining credibility of the process and ensuring doubt about conclusions. Even if schedule delays occur as a result, an acceptable outcome depends on public confidence.

If the WHO is to minimally meet it’s stated objectives to develop a solid base of scientific evidence and help countries effectively identify and manage RF health risks, then it is important that the most knowledgeable panel of experts be appointed to prepare the RF EHC Monograph. At present, the EHC Core Group members uniformly represent attitudes and scientific positions of ICNIRP, an organization whose membership has steadfastly refused to accept new scientific evidence of potential health risks from non-thermal, low-intensity radiofrequency radiation despite recent scientific advances in knowledge on the subject. (1)

There now many thousands of high quality scientific papers indicating possible non-thermal RF risks to health and those experts most competent by virtue of their research contributions are absent from this process. WHO Interphone studies on humans (2010-2016) have found increased risk of malignant brain cancer in adults with ten years and greater exposure to cell phone radiation (ipsilateral use). Newly released animal studies conducted over a 16-year period by the NIEHS National Toxicology Program now report clear carcinogenic effects of chronic exposure to RF. In June of 2016, the NTP documented statistically significant risks for cancers of the brain and heart, as well as pre-cancerous lesions in animals exposed to RF, but not in control animals. Both human and animal results are now available to incorporate in the RF EHC risk assessment. This important effort can only be assured with a more balanced composition of core participants in the process. As well, the membership needs to be inclusive of under-represented countries such as Russia, China, India, Turkey, and Iran whose research communities have produced the majority of studies on non-thermal effects of RF in recent years.

Wireless impacts on pets and wildlife

This overview was written in 2009. The information is more critical today.

From Facts are Facts

Antenna Towers make it a Dog’s Life…

Animals don’t know anything about electromagnetic pollution. It just makes them sick. The effects of cellular and wireless phones on the health of dogs, cats, horses and cows.

Hiding is futile: Cellular radiation can find you everywhere.
Hiding is futile: Cellular radiation can find you everywhere.

In today’s day and age, we’re no longer taught how to understand nature. We’re taught instead to analyze it, change it and exploit it. There are only a handful of people today that fully appreciate nature’s inherent wisdom. Humans tend to primarily focus their attention on quick success and comfort. Viktor Schauberger’s warning, however, that “if we hope to survive, we must first understand nature and then copy it,” has never been more topical.

Nature is the expression of a vision, an elaborate, detailed and planned undertaking based on principles that are valid in both the visible and invisible world, in the macro and microcosm. Modern science attempts to solve the puzzle of life through analysis and detailed research. It constantly overlooks the fact, however, that things are often more than the sum of their parts.

Nature is the example. It shows us the principles of life, what’s good for our health and what makes us sick. We’re faced with these perfect examples on a daily basis, but modern science and today’s economics forge their own “laws” that butt heads with nature and haughtily hope to win.

We disturb and destroy nature on a daily basis with our environmentally adverse technologies. Plants and animals suffer stoically and quietly from the effects of mobile radio and similar communications technologies. AC-produced microwaves don’t occur naturally in nature, so we can’t expect it to know how to react to them either. Dying forests have as much, if not more, to do with microwaves than with CO2 and acid rain.

A bird flock’s or a whale’s sense of orientation becomes scrambled. They become lost or end up beaching, thus meeting their end. Many bird species are breeding less often and are in danger of becoming extinct. Cats, dogs, birds, cattle, bees and horses are the focus of the rest of this article and the following cases highlight exactly what we’re doing to our beloved companions every day.

Animals may not know the danger of microwaves, but they still suffer from their effects. Animals are neither hysterical nor hypochondriac and make the perfect test subjects for the allegedly “unproven” side effects of mobile phones and other communications radiation. Animals cannot lie and don’t make a show of their suffering. They simply become sick and die.

From Bees to People

“The information-processing and function systems of today’s humans, plants and animals are bombarded with artificial magnetic, electric and electromagnetic fields from numerous mobile and telecommunications sources in a concentration and intensity as never before. The consequences of these developments put forth by their critics cannot be overlooked any longer. Bees and other insects are disappearing. Birds avoid certain regions and are disoriented in others. Humans suffer functional problems and other sicknesses. And the evidence that suggests some of these problems may be inheritable means we’re passing them on to the next generation.”

This is the sobering testimony of Dr. Ulrich Warnke, an internationally renowned German scientist at the University of Saarland, given in his recently published report, Bienen, Vögel und Menschen über die Zerstörung der Natur durch Elektrosmog (Bees, Birds and Humans – on Electrosmog’s Destructive Effects on Nature), following years of research.
http://competence-initiative.net/KIT/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/ki_beesbirdsandmankind_screen.pdf

The bio-scientist is familiar with nature’s electromagnetic ways like few others. In his study, which marks the beginning of a series of newly published literature by independent scientists, doctors and technicians, he’s shown how intelligently and delicately nature has woven electrical and magnetic fields into the fabric of life. He’s just as convincing at showing how irresponsible we’ve been recently when it comes to dealing with these natural forces. By his approximations, modern humanity is posed to destroy in decades, with electromagnetic radiation what nature has built over the course of millions of years.

The introduction to Ulrich Warnke’s report explains: “The destruction of the necessities of life has already wiped out many species for good. Most people have remained uninterested, however, since these species have filled ecological niches, not affecting their personal lives in any way. Now, the endangerment of these animals is, however, threatening human existence in new and unexpected ways. The constantly changing and increasingly stronger artificial energy fields emanating from technological sources confuse animals that rely on the electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic fields within the Earth’s atmosphere for orientation and navigation and make it impossible for them to find their way back to their dwelling grounds. Most humans would assumedly take no note of this if it didn’t affect one of the most important insect species: the honeybee. The honeybee is an irreplaceable link in the process of fructification. No bees means scarce fruit, vegetable and crop harvests.”

Worker bees are no longer returning to their hives, whereby the queen and the entire brood perish. Science has already come up with a name for this occurrence: Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which accounts for a previously unexplained disruption in bee behavior.1 Unusual drops in bee populations have already been observed in Switzerland, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and, most recently, in Austria, Germany, South Tyrol, Spain and Poland. 25 to 50 percent of American beekeepers have reported losses due to CCD. Within half a year, 50 to 90 percent of their bees disappeared. Those that have remained are so weak that they hardly produce any honey. The great bee extinction is already under way in the USA. Lately, truckloads of beehives have been imported for large sums of money in order to pollinate the fields. This is how far removed from nature we’ve become. 2006 saw an 11% drop in US honey production. It’s looking about the same in Switzerland.

Investigations have uncovered various sources for the recent phenomena, but none fully come to a conclusion: winters alone appear to not have been severe enough to account for the losses. There aren’t any genetically modified plants in Switzerland, for instance, whose pollen can harm bees. Monoculture, the use of land for only one crop, doesn’t exist in Switzerland to the degree it does in America. Poisonous insecticides have been used for decades.

Pennsylvania Smart Meters forced on residents; expensive off grid systems only option; health damage dismissed by officials

From the Philadelphia Inquirer

by Andrew Maykuth
December 7, 2016

Some people think Diane and Stephen Van Schoyck are kooks, so they’re careful telling how they became sick in 2014 after Peco installed a smart meter on their house in Langhorne, Bucks County.

“We both woke up, couldn’t sleep,” said Stephen Van Schoyck, 64, a clinical psychologist in private practice. They heard an unrelenting hum from the house’s wiring.

Diane Van Schoyck, 62, an artist, said she developed chest pains, shortness of breath, and shingles. The couple did some research and suspected the wireless transmissions from their new smart meter were the culprit.

The Van Schoycks are among a small but resolute community of customers opposing the new digital smart meters for a variety of reasons, including health concerns and fear of government intrusion into their privacy.

Frustrating these customers, some to the point of desperation, is the 2008 Pennsylvania law that ordered state-regulated electric utilities to install the meters. No exceptions.

“The question is, how far do you have to go in the state of Pennsylvania to protect yourself from harm?” Stephen Van Schoyck said.

Defiant, the Van Schoycks replaced Peco’s digital device with an analog meter they bought on the internet, the kind with spinning dials. “That restored our ability to sleep, it created a tremendous difference,” Stephen said.

But it put them on a collision course with Peco, which threatened to terminate their electric service. So the Van Schoycks took a radical step:

Activated glial cells cause pain and inflammation – more clues on the health effects of Smart Meters and wireless radiation

More on all-important glial cells.

From Medical Xpress

Pain-initiating function of glial cells identified for the first time
November 11, 2016

The sensation of pain occurs when neural pathways conduct excitation generated by tissue damage to the spinal cord, where the nociceptive information is extensively pre-processed. From there, the information is transmitted to the human brain, where the sensation of “pain” is finally created. This is the general belief. However, researchers from the Division of Neurophysiology at MedUni Vienna’s Center for Brain Research have now discovered that pain is not just a matter of nerves but that non-neuronal cells, the glial cells, are also involved in clinically relevant pain models and their activation is sufficient to amplify pain. The study has now been published in the leading journal Science.

Glial cells are the commonest type of cells in the and . They surround neurons but are distinct from them and play an important supporting role – for example, in material transport and metabolism or the fluid balance in the brain and spinal cord.

Novel explanation for puzzling pain phenomena

At the same time, however, when they are activated – by processes, for example ¬– glial cells are themselves able to release messenger substances, such as inflammatory cytokines. Glial cells therefore have two modes: a protective and a pro-inflammatory mode. “The activation of glial cells results in a pain-amplifying effect, as well as spreading the pain to previously unaffected parts of the body. For the very first time, our study provides a biological explanation for this and for other hitherto unexplained pain phenomena in medicine,” says Jürgen Sandkühler, Head of the Division of Neurophysiology at MedUni Vienna’s Center for Brain Research.

Over-activation of glial cells in the spinal cord can, for example, be caused by strong pain stimuli from a wound or surgical intervention, or even by opiates. Sandkühler: “This could also explain why opiates are initially very good at relieving pain but then often cease to be effective. Another example is the phenomenon of “withdrawal” in drug addicts, where activated glial cells cause severe pain throughout the body.”

A healthy lifestyle [and reducing wireless radiation exposure] can beneficially impact the glial cell system

According to Sandkühler, neuroinflammatory diseases of the brain, environmental factors and even the person’s own lifestyle can lead to activation of . Examples from the current literature are: depression, anxiety disorders and chronic stress, multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s and diabetes, as well as lack of exercise and poor diet. Sandkühler: “Glial  are an important factor in ensuring the equilibrium of a person’s neuroinflammatory system.” The study results give grounds for speculation that improvements in a person’s lifestyle could have a beneficial impact upon this system and ensure that they generally suffer less pain or “minor niggles”, says Sandkühler: “It is therefore in our own hands: thirty minutes of moderate exercise three or four times a week, a healthy diet and avoiding putting on excess weight can make a huge difference.”

Gliogenic LTP spreads widely in nociceptive pathways

Glial cells contribute to pain

Pain hypersensitivity can spread to unaffected body regions immediately surrounding the initial insult. Sometimes it can even spread to the opposite site of the body or to large body areas and cause widespread pain. Kronschläger et al. discovered a form of synaptic plasticity in the spinal cord that may explain the spread of pain hypersensitivity. This plasticity was induced by the activation of glial cells. The spread was mediated by gliotransmitters that diffuse widely, even reaching the cerebrospinal fluid at biologically relevant concentrations.

Science, this issue p. 1144

Abstract

Learning and memory formation involve long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strength. A fundamental feature of LTP induction in the brain is the need for coincident pre- and postsynaptic activity. This restricts LTP expression to activated synapses only (homosynaptic LTP) and leads to its input specificity. In the spinal cord, we discovered a fundamentally different form of LTP that is induced by glial cell activation and mediated by diffusible, extracellular messengers, including D-serine and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and that travel long distances via the cerebrospinal fluid, thereby affecting susceptible synapses at remote sites. The properties of this gliogenic LTP resolve unexplained findings of memory traces in nociceptive pathways and may underlie forms of widespread pain hypersensitivity.

Why wireless radiation’s sleep impacts are so dangerous

When people report health problems from wireless radiation exposure – Smart Meters, Wi-Fi, cell towers, etc. — sleep problems, often severe, are one of the most common problems mentioned. This includes difficulty falling asleep, inability to fall asleep, and difficulty staying asleep.

Chronic sleep problems are now widely experienced by the public. A recent article in Townsend Letter for Doctors explains why sleep is so critical to health, particularly to brain health.

Townsend Letter for Doctors, July 2016 — http://www.townsendletter.com/

Excerpt:

Glymphatic system

The recent discovery of the glymphatic system seems to be a key piece in understanding our patient’s symptoms and strategies for treatment.

The glymphatic system is named after the role of glial cells in removing fluid waste products from the brain. It is a brainwide pathway that facilitates the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) along para-arterial channels to exchange with interstitial fluid (ISF) along paravenous pathways.

Glial cells, specifically astrocytes, play a key role in removing waste products from the brain. Astrocytes form a network of conduits using projections called end-feet that surround arteries and veins inside the brain. The end-feet have aquapoints (water channels) to move CSF in the brain through arteries an ISF out of the brain through veins.

Researchers have demonstrated that the space between brain cells increases during sleep because the brain cells are shrinking to only 40% of their daytime size. The increased space allows for increased removal of toxins from the brain. We often use liposomal melatonin as not only a sleep aid but also a strategy to detoxify the central nervous system. Melatonin has been shown to remove mercury, aluminum, cadmium, viruses, parasites and bacteria from the brain – at night during deep sleep. Melatonin- not glutathione – is also the most potent antioxidant the brain uses to heal itself.

If waste is not properly removed from the brain due to aging, injury, or lack of sleep via the glymphatics, it accumulates and may be a cause of neurodegenerative disease.

——————————————————————————–

Gliomas are malignant tumors of glial cells. Malignant brain tumors are now the most common cause of cancer death in adults aged 15-39 years. The U.S. National Toxicology Program research found increased gliomas, malignant schwanomas (heart tumors) and pre-cancerous lesions in rats exposed for only two years to wireless radiation.ii The international Interphone study found Increased gliomas in humans who used cellphones as little as ½ hour per day for 10 years.iii

The importance of sleep and how the lack of sleep prevents the brain and these critical glial cells from doing their vital nightly detox function may explain why glial cells are developing malignant tumors, and why overall rates of neurological disease and death are rising, particularly in the U.S., and occurring at younger and younger ages.iv

As Dr. Ronald Melnick, now retired from the NTP, said to the New York Times:

In my view, a pediatrician would be acting irresponsibly if he or she knew and understood the implications of the human and animal cancer data on cell phone radiation and did not offer precautionary advice to the parents of his or her patients.v

Indeed, oncologists, neurologists, and public health officials as well.

This is a public health emergency. Yet all the while, higher levels of exposure are mandated by the government and rolled out by industry. The downstream effects will be devastating for our society.

v http://microwavenews.com/news-center/ntp-nyt
Melnick was a Senior Toxicologist and Director of Special Programs in the Environmental Toxicology Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health, and is now retired.

Canada: Smart Meter logs 130 kW hours during power outage

From CBC News

Hydro One meter drives up electricity bill during power outage, customer says
By Jeff Walters
November 23, 2016

A snowstorm near Thunder Bay, Ont. knocked out power to thousands of Hydro One customers over the past weekend, but the outage didn’t stop one meter from counting up the kilowatts, according to a man who keeps a close eye on his electricity use.

Jerome Anderson, who lives just outside the city, says he was without electricity for about 48 hours, but his metre recorded more usage than a typical weekend when the power is on.

Part of Anderson’s daily routine is to take a look at his hydro meter, which logs approximately 45 to 60 kilowatt hours (kWh) per day, depending on the season.

Anderson says he checked the meter on Friday morning, and it was at 9994 kWh. When the electricity came back on, and he checked the meter Monday morning, it was much higher than expected.

“It had said that in the 48 hours where the power was completely off, both on the line and on the main breaker, and in the small shoulder hours either side, during those 72 hours we had used approximately 130 kWh of power,” Anderson said.

Hydro One said it will test a customer’s meter, free of charge, if there is a concern that it may not be reading accurately.

Anderson said he’s had those tests done and crews could not find any problems.

Hydro One 20151104

Hydro One will come and test a customer’s meter if they believe it is not reading power usage correctly. (Darren Calabrese/Canadian Press)

“They’ve sent out test crews, they’ve assured me the meter is accurate when they take it off the pole and they put their test rig on it and check it out for a minute or two,” he said. “But, there’s a mystery here. How can I use so much power when the house has been basically shut down? ”

A spokesperson for Hydro One said a device designed and manufactured by a third party is used to test the accuracy of hydro meters and they’re found to be “almost one hundred percent accurate.”

Meanwhile Anderson said he’s frustrated that his electricity bills and his usage don’t seem to add up.

“They keep saying it’s my problem. So, where do we go from here?,” he asked.
